What is Paraiba?
A Paraíba gemstone is a rare variety of tourmaline distinguished by its intense neon blue, green, or turquoise colors. Unlike ordinary tourmalines, Paraíba stones owe their remarkable appearance to the presence of copper and manganese within their crystal structure. These elements create the gemstone's signature glowing effect, often described as "electric" or "neon.
The Origin of the Paraiba Gemstone
The Paraiba gemstone originated in the state of Paraíba, located in northeastern Brazil. The story of its discovery is as fascinating as the gemstone itself. During the 1980s, Brazilian miner Heitor Dimas Barbosa became convinced that a valuable gemstone lay hidden beneath the hills of Paraíba. Despite years of unsuccessful excavation and financial difficulties, Barbosa continued his search with remarkable determination.
In 1987, shortly before Barbosa could personally witness the success of his efforts, miners working in the São José da Batalha region uncovered brilliant blue-green tourmaline crystals unlike anything previously seen. Their vivid color immediately distinguished them from all other tourmalines. The gemstone was named “Paraiba” after the Brazilian state where it was first discovered.
The discovery revolutionized the gemstone industry. Until then, tourmalines were appreciated for their wide variety of colors, but none displayed the extraordinary neon brilliance of the Paraiba variety. The gemstone quickly gained international recognition, becoming one of the most sought-after gems in the world.
Geological Formation
Paraíba tourmalines formed millions of years ago within pegmatite rocks, which are coarse-grained igneous rocks rich in rare minerals. During their formation, unusual geological conditions allowed copper and manganese to become incorporated into the tourmaline crystals.
This rare chemical combination is responsible for the gemstone's extraordinary colors. Since these precise geological conditions occur only in limited locations, genuine Paraíba gemstones remain exceptionally rare.
Beyond Brazil: Other Sources
Although Brazil remains the original source of Paraíba tourmalines, similar copper-bearing tourmalines were later discovered in Nigeria in 2001 and Mozambique in 2005.
These African deposits also produce stunning gemstones with vibrant blue, green, and violet shades. However, many collectors continue to regard the original Brazilian Paraíba stones as the most prestigious because of their historical significance, exceptional rarity, and often more intense neon appearance.
Today, gemological laboratories identify Paraíba tourmalines based on their copper-bearing composition rather than solely on their geographic origin, provided they meet accepted gemological standards
